Just when you thought you knew all the regional combos of meat, onions, and bread. We kept seeing the word Runza around Nebraska. There is even a fairly visible fast food chain called Runza with shiny green and yellow signs. We clearly needed to investigate. I was surprised to learned that Runza is a regional junk food favorite of Czech origin that is basically beef, onions and cabbage cooked then wrapped in a dough pocket, often eaten with mustard. Variations are popular, but the classic reminds me of a cross between a Philly cheesesteak and a Yooper pastie. The one pictured here was served at a little lunch place we found on Roadfood.com. Even though I had never had a Runza before, I recognized it instantly as pure comfort food.
